Community-Identity-Stability
Keagan Felker Community, Identity and Stability are the three essential ideas that the community of “Brave New World” lives by and builds their lives around. This picture is telling how different and strange their society is compared to ours. The picture in the middle of my representation of “identity” is showing how the embryos’ social status and occupation are predetermined before they mature. For example, in Brave New World, you don’t have the chance to choose your occupation-they have Pre-Destinators to choose your field of work when you grow up. They also have certain occupations for certain classes of people; Alphas, Betas, Deltas, Gammas, and Epsilons. The Alphas are the highest class of people in Brave New World, and epsilons are the lowest class. The Alphas and Betas are made to be hatchery workers, and since the Deltas, Gammas, and Epsilons are the lower class, they all have the lower, boring, and not-as-important jobs. As a large and superior part of their society, the Alphas often patronize the more inferior classes. Much like in our society today-the lower classes are often frowned upon by the middle and upper class people. According to the book, the different classes even each other out-and that’s where the idea of “stability” comes in. In the society in Brave New World, all pleasures were easy pleasures. Community-Identity-Stability
Keagan Felker Community, Identity and Stability are the three essential ideas that the community of “Brave New World” build their lives around. This picture is showing how different and strange their society is compared to ours. The top picture in this drawing depicts how the community all relies on one another. The middle picture is showing how the embryos’ lives are getting planned for them. The bottom picture is interpreting how the upper and lower classes of people “stabilize” each other and create unity in this community. The picture in the middle of my representation of “identity” is showing how the embryos’ social status and occupation are predetermined before they mature. For example, in Brave New World, you don’t have the chance to choose your occupation-they have Pre-Destinators to choose your field of work when you grow up. Much like in our society today-the lower classes are often frowned upon by the middle and upper class people. According to the book, the different classes even each other out-and that’s where the idea of “stability” comes into play. as well as “identity”, because they’re all given their identities-they have no choice as to what they want to be…For example in our society, if we see a person of higher class or wealth, we have a tendency to look up to that person or feel envious. In Brave New World, if you are predestined to be a Delta-you don’t look up to the higher class (Alphas and Betas), you wouldn’t feel envy, you would just know you’re a Delta; so that’s what you would want to be. In Brave New World, all pleasures are easy pleasures. Meaning that all of the pleasures that they get: soma, sex, and everything else they receive are things that they don’t have to work for. For example: they all receive soma whenever they want it, (soma is a drug that everyone takes to escape the stress of reality). They also can have sex with whomever, whenever they want-they also have the “Feelies”, which is a theatre in which they sit in vibrating chairs while watching sexual movies. The Feelies are where John and Lenina went one night and John was overwhelmed by all of the soma and sexual experiences going on around him-so he freaked out and left the theatre. This is different from parts of our society because most of us have to (or want to) work for something to receive it. Although some people get everything they want, others may want the satisfaction of working for their reward. This all in a way ties into community because all of these people as a community have been made to know to go to the Feelies and be able to feel easy pleasure. |
