I was the moderator of the open debate and the motion was, “Natural gas found in shale formations and coal bed methane formations is a cheap, clean and abundant source of energy that should be a cornerstone of our energy portfolio for the next several decades.” I am
undecided all the way around. The number of reasons for and against are kind of
overwhelming so I just cannot decide at the time. I know that
producing energy can end up being an environment destroyer. I am still torn
since it doesn't seem to like there is a way to create energy without risking
the well-being of the environment. The strongest
evidence that came from the side for, was that there would have to be 25
meltdowns in order for it to be as dangerous and harmful as coal. The strongest
argument that came from the side against was the argument that greenhouse gasses
are still emitted due to mining and transporting uranium. So nuclear power isn't as clean as it is portrayed to be. What is the big controversy over
how much each energy source pollutes the atmosphere? No matter what it is, it
will pollute the earth at some point in the mining or usage process. I was a
moderator so I didn't do any debating. My
environmental ethics were preservationism and sustainability-so when I see our
outdoor environment being disturbed by man-made oil, gas, and coal rigs, this
goes against both ideas I have. I think that
I was very professional, I spoke evenly (not too fast or too slow), and I feel
like my information and transitions went smoothly and went well. I think that
the debate went perfectly; I mean I didn’t need to lead anyone with questions, and
they debated strongly and freely so I even had to break it up and cool it down
in the end.

Opening Statement:
Hello folks and thank you for joining us for this evening’s debate. My name is Keagan and I will be the moderator for this evening’s debate. Our consumption of natural gas is now becoming more relevant to our economy. One main reason for this incline in usage is due to it being a much safer and more economical alternative to extracting and utilizing oil. The use of natural gas in the United States is also on the rise because we can now extract it domestically. This is very economical for us as a society since we are less dependent on other countries for our much needed resources. Although these seem beneficial, there will be environmental costs as well. This evening, our debaters will each present us with an opening statement for approximately 2-2.5 minutes. Our open debate will proceed for 12 or so minutes. Closing statements will all run for about 6 minutes. For those of you voting electronically, please pause your videos now. To vote, you will need to click the link in the comment section of this video, click on your moderator, and make your vote. For those of you voting right here with us, please take your ballot, fill it out and submit it. You will need to vote at this time, as well as after our debate has concluded. The motion is “Natural gas found in shale formations and coal bed methane formations is a cheap, clean and abundant source of energy that should be a cornerstone of our energy portfolio for the next several decades.” On the side debating for natural gas; Mr. Justin Carlson, Mr. Jake Pinkney, and Mr. Anthony Pappas. On the side opposing natural gas, we have Mr. Thayer R. Stowers and Ms. Andie Paschal. We will begin with opening statements from our side in opposition of using natural gas. We will start off with Ms. Paschal. Miss, please begin whenever you are ready...We will now hear opening statements from the side in favor of utilizing natural gas starting with Mr. Pappas. Closing Statement: Thank you to all of our debaters, and thank you all for attending this open debate. I hope this was an informational and educational experience for all of our attendees. Once again, do not forget to submit your second vote; either electronically, or physically. Again, my name is Keagan and I am your moderator. |
