These two plates, one brass and one steel, are my final project pieces. These are my most refined and best looking works so far. These two pieces really show my work ethic over LINK. I feel like I really got to show some very significant improvement over my three weeks as an intern.
LINK Mentor Interview: Marty Rabeno

LINK Project Proposal:
LINK Project Proposal: Gun Engraving Keagan Felker I am interning with a gun engraver here in Durango by the name of Marty Rabeno. He hand engraves firearms and it really is a true art. He is a founding member of the Firearms Engravers Guild of America (FEGA), (which I am now a member of). The guild has many, many members that are all very skilled at both engraving and scrimshaw work. I am looking forward to learning a lot from Mr. Rabeno, not just in engraving, but also in improving my drawing skills. I hope to be successful in this art, not only through income, but also through gaining artistic talent. After recently meeting with my mentor to go over my materials and techniques, he and I decided that my final project will be both a hand engraved bracelet and a mold of an engraving that may be used as a pin or other ornamental piece. This supports the work of my mentor because how well he teaches me will reflect how well I learn and perform in the program. This art contributes to the global community through hand-crafting custom firearms for those who value them. I hope to learn how to be a skilled engraver and drawer through the completion of this project as well as eventually being recognized by other highly skilled personnel in this field. The skills and knowledge I’ll need to develop in order to complete my LINK project will be patience, practice, steadiness, and focus. I will need all three of these especially since gun engraving is such an intricate and detailed work of art. I will need a lot of practice over the next few weeks, as well as the years to come-if I choose to continue pursuing this art. The steps I will need to take in order to complete my project for exhibition will be to practice and get as close as I can to perfecting my drawing skills, and to make sure I stay focused on my work and not to let anything take away from it. I will also need to make sure I get everything done one thing at a time so that I may complete each task to my best abilities. Once I get good enough at the sketching aspect of my work, I can then begin working with and on metal. I can start practicing my actual engraving work and techniques. One challenge that had initially risen during the setup of my internship, was that there were no gun engravers that wanted to take in an intern-Mr. Rabeno initially turned me down for an internship. That was before we took a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada to go to a gun show that was also hosting members of FEGA as well. When we arrived at the show in Vegas, I think that Marty then realized that I was serious about wanting an internship with such a skilled engraver. My internship has gotten me very excited and I’m totally pumped to start it off. I think this is going to be a great fit-combining my love and passion; my passion for drawing and art, and my love for firearms and the beauty I can bring to them. Something that my internship brings to mind is definitely excitement and I cannot wait to get started. I think that this placement is going to be an incredible learning experience for me. I believe that this will be one of the greatest and most fulfilling learning experiences of my life so far. |
