La Vida Loca de Keagan
(The Crazy Life of Keagan)
Keagan Felker
I’ve always been shown that males in our society are meant to be strong, built, tough, and are meant to have the upper hand in every situation. But growing up, I was taught that for people to like you, they should like you for who you are. So I always try to act like myself. With doing this, I know all the friends I have like me for who I am and no matter what happens, they know I’m being myself.
So the question I have is: have you ever taken the time to think about the most important components of your life? If you have, then maybe you can make a connection to some of the important elements that I’ve included in my mask. But I don’t want to think of it as a mask. I like it to refer to it as more of a “mosaic” or “collage”. There are so many artistic and highly important elements incorporated in my “face shaped collage”, that it couldn’t possibly be just a regular mask! There were so many main elements included, it was almost hard for me to fit them all on.
To start with, the top left side of my mask shows my family: the number one reason that I am socialized the way I am. Without them, I would be nowhere close to where I am today. I would’ve been brought up a completely different way. I wouldn’t have the same friends, the same house, or I might not even live in the same town! I may even be living in the streets! My life would be different all together. Now the bottom left half of my mask is entirely dedicated to my friends. The ones I grew up with, and the friends that I’ve made along the way. My friends keep me company when I’m bored, they keep me busy when I don’t have anything better to do, and I can always trust my friends with anything. I’ve learned that if you can’t trust someone, then they’re not really a true friend. Without my friends, I would be very different; socially, and mentally. Without all the friends I have now, I would be socially different, and probably act differently too. My friends and family mean everything to me. Without them, I would be nowhere close to where I am at this stage of my life. They are the largest parts of who I am.
The skin tone background of my mask represents one part of my identity category; being a white, American male. If I was any other race, or ethnicity, then I wouldn’t be socialized the same way I am now. It represents who I am ethnically.
Next, the vivid yellow headphones that I wear represent three main things. First, the headphones themselves, represent my strong love of music. I love listening to music and playing my guitar. Secondly, they also represent me being a teenager, (the other part of my identity category). Music to me as a teenager is one large part of my social life that I love doing. Third, the neon yellow color represents my personality. Meaning that I see myself as a bright, vivid, lively person.
The top right section of my mask symbolizes the athletics I do to keep fit, keep in shape, stay healthy, and become closer with friends and family. First, some sports I do would be baseball, football, soccer, basketball, Frisbee, and a few others. I also go hunting with my dad whenever deer, elk, pheasant, or turkey season comes around.
The middle section on the right side of my mask shows my love for art. No matter what form its done in. Whether its music, drawing, sculpting, or painting. Art has been such a large part of my life ever since I was two or three years old. For example, if I’m in a bad mood, then I’ve always just started drawing up some pictures and that usually releases most of my stress or uneasiness. On the other hand, drawing can just keep me busy when I’m bored.
Last but certainly not least, the bottom right section of my mask. This section includes pictures representing the other part of my identity category: a teenage male. These pictures to me, represent some of the most basic aspects of being a teenage male in our modern society. Mainly to be popular, stylish, and to keep up with the latest trends coming from the media and our surroundings.
So if you ever have a spare moment to take even just a glance at how you are being a socialized, then it may give you a larger perspective of how your life is working. Working right in front of your eyes.
